Carlos Hernández
Carlos is an El Salvador local who has guided volcano hikes on Santa Ana, the mountain Salvadorans call Ilamatepec, since 2018. By his own count he has walked more than 1,000 international travellers up to the crater rim. His ground is the practical side of the climb: how to pace a mixed group through the loose-rock section, when the clouds come over the summit, which weeks the lake glows brightest, and what the wind on the rim does to people who packed for the beach. Ask him what makes the day go well and the answer is plain. Start on time, carry real water, wear real shoes, and let the mountain set the pace.
